Beatblock is an arcade-style rhythm game developed by BubbleTabby, and published by SKY HOUR WORKS. The first PC Demo was released on itch.io on May 28th, 2024. It originally released without a publisher, but it was announced on June 20th, 2024 that SKY HOUR WORKS would be publishing the game alongside an official Steam release of the demo.

Gameplay

Beatblock can be controlled by either mouse and keyboard or controller.

The player controls a character ('Cranky') in the middle of the screen and has to aim a shield at incoming notes coming from around the player. The angle of the shield is controlled by either the mouse or the primary analogue stick on a controller.

The notes in Beatblock consist of BlocksA square shaped Note., HoldsA circular shaped note, MinesA note with 8 sharp points., MineholdsA note with 8 sharp points and a rounded center., Taps, SidesA thin, rectangular shaped note with a slightly top and bottom section. and InversesA Diamond shaped note with a smaller diamond in the center..

  • BlocksA square shaped Note. and HoldsA circular shaped note must be blocked by the Paddle extending from the player character, while the player must avoid touching minesA note with 8 sharp points. and mineholdsA note with 8 sharp points and a rounded center..
  • Inverses A Diamond shaped note with a smaller diamond in the center. act identically to Blocks A square shaped Note. but come from the opposite side of the screen and must instead hit the back of the paddle.
  • Tap Notes require the player to press buttons using either the keyboard, mouse or a connected controller when the tap note reaches the paddle. This also applies to 'Extra Taps' which may not be tied to a note.
  • Sides A thin, rectangular shaped note with a slightly top and bottom section. require the player to hit the note from the side, and will be counted as a miss if you hit them directly.

At the end of a song, the player is given a score. There are currently no unlocks tied to scoring.

Trivia

  • Beatblock was originally developed for the Playdate handheld console, however this version of the game was officially discontinued on July 22nd, 2021 and the source code was made public.
