Cytus
Cytus refers to a rhythm game series developed by Rayark. The game features a moving judgement line and notes that must be hit as the line passed over them. Games in the franchise are available on mobile devices and certain consoles. A cancelled arcade version in collaboration with Capcom was also in development.
Gameplay
Cytus' gameplay takes place in an open gameplay field. Notes spawn in the field, and must be hit as a moving judgement line (known as the Active Scan Line) passes over them. The line moves horizontally and vertically across the screen, and changes direction upon hitting the boundary of the play area.
Three types of notes exist in the original Cytus. Click notes require a single input as the judgement line passes over them. Hold notes require the note to be held until the end of its length to receive full points. Drag notes requires the player to move their input along the track to nodes. The judgement line does not change speed throughout the song.
Hitting a note on time gives a Perfect judgement. Hitting slightly early or late or releasing a hold note early gives a Good judgement. Hitting a note far too early or releasing a hold note far too early gives a Bad judgement. Not hitting a note at all gives a Miss judgement. Drag notes can only give a Perfect or Miss judgement.
Cytus II's gameplay is functionally the same while introducing new mechanics. Flick notes require a tap and subsequent horizontal input, and can only have Perfect or Miss judgements. Click drag notes require a precise input at the beginning of the drag, and functions identically to a drag after. The Active Scan Line can also speed up and slow down throughout the song.
Cytus α features an alternative way of playing utilizing the Nintendo Switch Joy-Cons. The buttons of the Joy-Cons can be pressed can be pressed in place of tapping notes. If several notes must be hit or held at the same time, the corresponding number of buttons must be hit or held.
The cancelled Cytus Omega would have been an arcade cabinet with a large interactable touchscreen. The gameplay would have been nearly identical, save for the alternative version of flick note. Instead of a horizontal swipe, the flick note required an input and swiping motion at a 45 degree angle in one of four indicated intercardinal directions.
