Melatonin is a rhythm game developed and published by Half Asleep Games, released on December 15th, 2022 on Steam and Nintendo Switch with the Playstation 5 version being released on March 12th, 2024. It is currently the only game developed by the studio.

Gameplay

Melatonin is inspired by the Rhythm Heaven franchise, using sound and audio cues in each level. Each cue can represent when to hold and/or release a key, which specific keys to press or a pattern for the player to follow. The Theme heavily draws from dreams and nightmares with each Chapter, called "Nights" containing a set of related "Dreams" which are the levels. Each Dream has a Normal and Hard difficulty, with Hard being unlocked after passing Normal. Each Dream uses a theme that ties to the theme for the Night. Each Night also contains a final "Mashup" Level that contains all the Dreams from the Night. All music of the game is exclusively lo-fi.

The game also features a custom editor mode, allowing players to create their own Mashup using their own songs and play other users' Mashups.

Trivia

  • Due to the audio design of the game, it is entirely possible to beat all the levels within the game without visual cues and going off audio cues only.
  • The game was only made by a single developer, David Huynh. Half Asleep is his Alias.[1]
