A Dance of Fire and Ice (commonly abbreviated to ADOFAI) is a rhythm game made by 7th Beat Games and published by Indienova. It's 7th Beat Games's first major game, followed by Rhythm Doctor. Both games share similar control schemes, but completely different mechanics. It is available on Steam and Itch.io as well as the Google Playstore and the Appstore.
ADOFAI was initially was an online demo released on Itch.io back in 2014 before getting a commercial release on Steam and Itch.io
In 2022, ADOFAI got DLC in the form of Neo Cosmos, which introduced new levels, a story mode, and new mechanics. The DLC was directed by TaroNuke, the creator of NotITG and the creator of the Mawaru NotITG levels, which are levels that have minigames in them and gimmicks similar to WarioWare. A level in Neo Cosmos, "No Hints Here!" is essentially this game's version of an official Mawaru level, as it has the same microgame mechanics those levels are known for.
Gameplay
ADOFAI tasks the players in controlling two planets on a winding path that corresponds to each beat. Unlike most rhythm games, this game relies mostly on hitting every beat. Any button on the keyboard will be registered, so there's no strict keybinds. The game also mainly uses 1 key, but other keys can be used for faster levels.
While this game does have visual cues in the form of the path, most of the cues are audio cues. There are also special tiles on the path that - among other things, can change speed, change the rotation of the planets, and add an additional planet[1].
There are also custom levels available through the Steam Workshop[2] or that can be downloaded manually. If the player were to access their Steam copy of the game on a different computer, only the Workshop levels will transfer over as the imported levels are local to a single computer.[3]
