Genre Vertical Scrolling Rhythm Game

Arcaea is a mobile rhythm game developed and published by Lowiro, first released on March 9th 2017. It is characterized by its 3D-laser style gameplay and extensive story and world modes.

Gameplay

Arcaea consists of four lanes and an open area above the lanes dictated by a Sky Input line. Notes travel down the lane and can be hit by tapping the corresponding ground input lane. There are four traditional types of notes, each restricted to certain playing areas. Ground and hold notes can only appear in lanes, while sky and arc notes only appear in the sky input area. Additionally, ground and sky notes require only a single tap to be hit, while hold and arc notes must be held until the end for full points.

Hitting a note perfectly gives a PURE judgement. If early or late by a larger margin, a FAR judgement is given, providing fewer points. Hitting much earlier or missing the note entirely gives a LOST judgement, and no points are given. Arcs and holds only have PURE and LOST judgements, only checking if you hit and hold them for the required time. Songs are cleared by hitting notes to fill a Recollection Gauge. Getting 70% or more clears the song. Partners may give different gauge types or change aspects of the UI or gameplay. Hitting every note with FAR or PURE judgements gives a FULL RECALL, while hitting all notes with PURE judgements gives a PURE MEMORY.

Arcaea for the Nintendo Switch features an alternative control scheme where the Joy-Cons and buttons are used. Each note is colored pink or blue, and must be hit by using the corresponding right or left Joy-Con. Sky, hold, and ground notes are hit using buttons, while arc notes use the analog sticks.

Trivia

  • When collabing with Groove Coaster, the devs ran into an issue, as the song "Singularity" by ETIA. shares the same name with a song by Vocaloid producer keisei. The solution was to append "-Binary Enfold-" at the end of the Arcea song crossing over into Groove Coaster. It is a reference to the DLC pack it was introduced in. However when crossing over with Ongeki, another song with the name "Singularity", composed by Technoplanet, existed in the game already. This time the song was not renamed, and both songs are in the game with the same name.
